Health Reform Pushes On, Opposition Follows

With nearly 50 million people in the United States without health insurance and another 25 million being considered underinsured, it would stand to reason that the country is badly in need of health care reform, right? You would think so, especially when so many people are going without care and yet insurance companies are recording record profits. Health care reform seems to make sense, yet there is opposition to making it a reality..
The Plan for Care
President Barack Obama has been touting the merits of his health care reform plan for a while. As his administration tries to move forward to put a system in place that would provide care to the uninsured, others strongly oppose it. There are other countries, such as Canada and Germany, who have such systems in place and despite any faults, are succeeding in providing their nations with care.
Recently, Senator Ted Kennedy also began pushing for a plan of his own, which would provide all Americans with “essential health care” benefits. Both proposals would largely alter or bring an end to big businesses charging people exorbitant rates, making it where the public is at times filing for bankruptcy, while those in charge take home million dollar bonuses.
Why the Opposition
Money? This may just be the case when it comes to the biggest opposition to a universal health care system. If it were to happen, millions would get the health care they need, yet some private insurance companies would stand to lose billions.
Opposition is largely coming from the Republican Party, and there are often myths perpetuated about universal care. Additionally, the American Medical Association recently came out in opposition to health care reform, stating that they believe it should be handled through private markets.
